Sustainability
Sustainability is a TEAM effort. It is about coming together and working together with a sense of shared purpose to embark on the journey of cultivating a sustainability culture, mindset and practices. To achieve sustainability success, it takes an enlightened, self-aware, and empowered working atmosphere that fosters all stakeholders to be part of the ecosystem of change. These stakeholders often include staff, departments, senior management, experts, laypeople, community volunteers, and appointed and elected leaders working collaboratively to share a vision of solving complex issues impacting the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental, and societal impact.
Bloomfield, NJ, has long been a leader in municipal sustainability in New Jersey. A Sustainable Jersey Bronze Certified community since 2010, Bloomfield, NJ, was among the first towns in the state to adopt its resolution in 2009 supporting and participating in the Sustainable New Jersey municipal sustainability program and designating Greener Bloomfield to serve as the Township’s authorized agent for the certification process.
The collaborative partnership between the Township and Greener Bloomfield, “The Green Team,” has continued ever since, ensuring that Bloomfield has maintained its Sustainable Jersey certification and, with it, has continued to receive public recognition for its efforts while maintaining its eligibility for the Program’s grants and resources to grow further and improve our community.
The mayor, council members, and administrative team are all dedicated to continuing Bloomfield’s commitment to sustainability.
Township of Bloomfield Community Asset Map
Created by the Township’s Green Team, this map provides a visual representation of community assets as identified by community stakeholders and residents during the development process of the Township’s 2025 Master Plan and incorporates new information from departmental resources previously only available as written lists. The Green Team continues to add new information and data sets through crowdsourcing initiatives and online community surveys.
Township of Bloomfield ERI Storymap
The Township of Bloomfield’s 2023 Environmental Resource Inventory (ERI) was made possible in part by a Sustainable Jersey Grant funded by the PSEG Foundation. Utilizing information from the ERI, the Bloomfield Environmental Commission created an online Storymap that compiles the Township ERI’s data and maps to show what is currently known about the township's natural resources and land use.
2025 Mayor's Monarch Butterfly Pledge
Mayors and other heads of local and tribal government are taking action to help save the monarch butterfly, an iconic species whose eastern populations have declined by 90% and western populations by 99% in recent years. Through the National Wildlife Federation's Mayors' Monarch Pledge, U.S. cities, municipalities, and other communities are committing to create habitat for the monarch butterfly and pollinators, and to educate residents about how they can make a difference at home and in their community.
