Construction to Begin Mid-September on Yearlong Renovation of Historic Bloomfield Children’s Library

September 10, 2025 - BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Construction on the long-anticipated renovation of the historic Bloomfield Children’s Library is set to begin in mid-September, with the yearlong project expected to be completed by August 2026.

Located at 90 Broad Street, the Bloomfield Children’s Library is part of the Bloomfield Green Historic District and has served the community since 1927. It also houses the Bloomfield Historical Society, making its preservation a key priority for the Township.

The renovation project includes a comprehensive scope of work: roof rehabilitation, window restoration, masonry and stone work, woodwork and trim restoration, and surrounding site improvements. All restoration efforts will adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties to ensure that the building’s architectural character is preserved while enhancing functionality.

As part of the site improvements, the existing shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the library will be removed. A landscape assessment found that the current plantings are overgrown, inappropriate for the historic character of the building, and are contributing to drainage and structural issues. New, historically appropriate landscaping will be installed after construction is complete.

“This project marks a major milestone for the community,” said Mayor Jenny Mundell. “We’re restoring a beloved local institution in a way that honors its history while making it more accessible and functional for future generations.”

Holly Belli, Director of the Bloomfield Public Library, emphasized the importance of this investment in the library’s future: “We are so excited to see this historic space receive the care and attention it deserves. These upgrades will not only protect the building’s integrity, but also allow us to better serve the children and families who rely on this library as a hub for learning and imagination.”

The Township of Bloomfield has awarded the renovation contract to Cypreco Industries, Inc., following an open bid process and a resolution passed during the June 16th Township Council meeting. The Township Administration and Township Engineer recommended Cypreco based on the company’s extensive experience with public sector and historic preservation projects, including its recent work on the City of Paterson library.

The library will remain open for most of the renovation, with modified access as needed to ensure safety and continuity of services. The Township will provide regular updates throughout the construction period to keep residents informed and minimize disruption.
