[ARCHIVED] United Way of Greater Newark Opens New VITA Free Tax Prep Site at the Bloomfield Public Library

Hot off the press

Bloomfield, N.J. – February 19, 2025: This week, United Way of Greater Newark (UWGN) announced the opening of a new Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site at the Bloomfield Public Library. Opening just in time for tax season, the new VITA site will help Bloomfield community members making $80,000 or less in taxable income navigate the tax filing process and file for free, saving them up to $248. The VITA program also helps eligible taxpayers claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other valuable tax credits, which can total over $6,000. Tax preparation support will be offered in English and Spanish.

“The VITA program is an important part of our mission to build thriving communities,” said United Way of Greater Newark President & CEO Catherine Wilson. “We strive to help our residents achieve financial stability through our VITA program by ensuring they claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. Both credits are powerful tools, keeping individuals and families out of poverty. This program is a vital piece in providing families with much-needed income."

UWGN expects to complete up to 200 tax filings this year at the Bloomfield location. Based on tax refunds from the previous year, the organization predicts it will be able to secure approximately $250,000-to-$350,000 in tax refunds and an additional $35,000 - $45,000 in avoided tax fees for Bloomfield residents through this program.

“I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to United Way of Greater Newark for partnering with us to bring the VITA free tax preparation program to Bloomfield,” said Bloomfield Mayor Jenny Mundell. “This initiative is a testament to our shared commitment to ensuring all residents have the resources they need to thrive. By offering free tax preparation services, we’re helping families keep more of their hard-earned money, which is vital for their financial stability and well-being. I encourage everyone who qualifies to take advantage of this valuable service.”

The expansion of the VITA program comes at a time when the New Jersey community needs free financial assistance the most. UWGN encourages the community to take advantage of this opportunity and file any outstanding back taxes, as this is the final year residents can receive the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

“We are thrilled to welcome the VITA program to the Bloomfield Public Library,” said Bloomfield Public Library Director Holly Belli. "As a trusted community hub, we are committed to offering resources that directly support the needs of our residents. This partnership with United Way of Greater Newark to provide free, professional tax preparation assistance can make a real difference to community members who may be struggling to make ends meet. We look forward to helping them navigate the tax season with ease and confidence.”

VITA is an IRS-sponsored service and part of the Newark Free Tax Prep, an initiative under the Newark Asset Building Coalition (NABC). With nearly half of the Greater Newark community living as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households. Since 2018, the program has helped prepare over 38,600 returns and saved the community more than $9.8 million in filing fees.
