Nearly 1,200 Bloomfield Street Signs to be Auctioned Off

BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- The Township of Bloomfield will be auctioning off street signs to all residents next week. The Township replaced all street signs in town over the past year, and rather than throw away the old signs, wanted to make sure residents interested in Bloomfield history could claim signs of their choosing. The online auction was originally scheduled for October, but was called off due to technical difficulties, and has now been rescheduled for Monday, December 9th at 8:00am until Friday, December 13th at 8:00am.

“When people saw the new signs, they were thrilled, but wanted to know what would become of the old signs. Some people wanted signs that matched their first or last names, but it mostly has been people wanting the signs of the streets they grew up on,” said Mayor Michael Venezia. “We just felt this was a great thing, and would give people a chance to have a special part of our town.”

The online auction will have 1,190 Bloomfield street signs available for sale to residents who want to own a piece of Bloomfield history. The online auction can be accessed at govdeals.com/bloomfieldtwpnj. The bidding will begin at $10 per sign and the highest bidder will be awarded the sign at the time of closing. All winning bid payments must be submitted by Monday, December 16th. Payments must be submitted to GovDeals through Paypal or by credit card. Winners will need to show proof of payment/bid via a printed paper receipt or email confirmation on their mobile device at time of pickup. Pick up dates are Thursday, December 19th 5:00-8:00pm, Friday, December 20th 12:00-7:00pm and Saturday, December 21st 9:00am-12:00pm in the Civic Center, located at 84 Broad St.

Many street names are represented by more than one sign, including Broad St., Bloomfield Ave., Broughton Ave., Watchung Ave., and Watsessing Ave. While two signs are yellow, most signs are the recognizable modern green or the older-looking blue.

The auction is taking place with resources from the Mayor’s Office, Department of Public Works and Parks Recreation & Cultural Affairs. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Township of Bloomfield. Any residents with questions can call Diana Aviles in the Mayor’s Office at (973) 680-4077.
