Public Health Nurses investigate all those with communicable / reportable diseases. Health Care Providers and laboratories are required by law to report a person with a positive result to any of the communicable / reportable listed to the local health department where the person resides. New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) provides guidance to public health nurses regarding specific treatment to the contacts of the patient.
Residents in New Jersey are followed on Communicable Disease Registry Surveillance System (CDRSS), a confidential, secure reporting program. NJDOH provides training to public health nurses on its use.
