Bloomfield Enhances Parks with New Trees and Amenities Ahead of Earth Day Celebrations

Home - News Flash Posted on April 14, 2025

April 14, 2025 - BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Township of Bloomfield is thrilled to announce the completion of a new initiative by the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Department, aimed at enhancing several municipal parks just ahead of Earth Day 2025. This project includes the addition of 30 new trees, 21 park benches, and 21 picnic tables across five key parks: Brookside Park, Felton Field, Upper Memorial Park, Vassar Field, and Wrights Field.

These improvements offer residents more opportunities to enjoy nature and spend quality time outdoors, whether relaxing on the new benches or gathering at the new picnic tables. The newly planted trees, including varieties such as Sugar Maples, Red Maples, and Kwanzan Cherry trees, were selected for their resilience and environmental benefits, such as providing shade and improving air quality.

“Our parks are a vital part of our community, and it’s exciting to see these upgrades take shape,” said Michael Sceurman, Director of Bloomfield Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs. “These trees, benches, and picnic tables will not only enhance the enjoyment of our parks, but also help to preserve our environment by offering more green spaces and shade for everyone to appreciate."

Bloomfield Mayor Jenny Mundell added, “we are committed to making Bloomfield’s parks even more welcoming and accessible for all our residents. This grant-funded initiative is just the beginning, and we look forward to continuing to invest in our community’s outdoor spaces. We hope these additions will inspire even more residents to get outside, explore our parks, and connect with nature.”

These upgrades were made possible through a $65,000 Local Recreation Improvement Grant (LRIG), which was secured to support the improvement of public spaces and make the town a more vibrant, sustainable place to live.

Spring Town-Wide Cleanup & Earth Day Celebration

To further celebrate Earth Month, Bloomfield will host its annual Spring Town-Wide Cleanup and Earth Day celebration on April 26, 2025.

The Spring Town-Wide Cleanup, organized by Bloomfield’s Beautification Committee, invites residents to join together and help improve the appearance of public spaces by removing litter from around town. Volunteers can register as individuals or a team, and choose their preferred cleanup location by April 20, 2025. The cleanup will run from 9:00 a.m. to noon, with material distribution between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m.

Later that day, The Township of Bloomfield, along with the Bloomfield Public Library, and Greener Bloomfield, will host the Annual Earth Day Celebration in the Library Courtyard, 90 Broad Street, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This fun-filled event will feature garden seed & plant giveaways, live music, food trucks, activities for children, and resources on sustainable living from local community and township groups.
