Bloomfield Ranks Among State’s Greenest Municipalities with Sustainable Jersey Silver Certification

November 10, 2025 - BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The Township of Bloomfield has been awarded Silver Certification by Sustainable Jersey, a prestigious statewide program that recognizes New Jersey municipalities for their leadership in advancing sustainability and community resilience.

The silver-level distinction, Sustainable Jersey’s highest tier of municipal recognition, reflects Bloomfield’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, civic engagement, and sustainable local government operations.

Bloomfield earned 500 points across 43 approved actions in 15 categories, surpassing the 350-point threshold required for silver certification. This marks the Township’s highest-ever Sustainable Jersey score and places Bloomfield among the top 12 highest-ranked municipalities out of 469 participating statewide, and second in Essex County.

“This achievement speaks to Bloomfield’s collective commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient community,” said Mayor Jenny Mundell. “Earning Sustainable Jersey’s Silver Certification is not only a reflection of our strong partnership with Greener Bloomfield, but also the dedication of our municipal staff, township departments, volunteers, and residents who make sustainability part of our community culture every day.”

Since 2009, when Bloomfield authorized Greener Bloomfield to serve as the Township’s official Green Team, the group has worked in close partnership with township leadership, municipal departments, as well as the Bloomfield Environmental Commission and Bloomfield Community Gardens to drive progress in environmental practices, community education, and sustainable planning. Under Greener Bloomfield’s coordination, the Township has consistently renewed its certification every three years, advancing from its initial Bronze-level status to Silver in 2025.

“This certification is the result of years of collaboration and shared vision for a more sustainable Bloomfield,” said Mollie Smith, Coordinator for Greener Bloomfield. “This year, the exceptional level of support and buy-in from the Mayor and Township staff allowed us to take our efforts to the next level, building on the dedication of our volunteers, the Greener Bloomfield team, and the Bloomfield Environmental Commission. Together, we were able to advance initiatives across energy, waste reduction, public health, and community engagement, earning recognition for the full breadth of our sustainable accomplishments.”

Highlights from Bloomfield’s 2025 certification include initiatives that improve municipal energy use, expand recycling and materials reuse programs, enhance green building and maintenance policies, support pollinator-friendly landscapes, and advance environmental justice and health equity.

Bloomfield will be recognized for attaining Silver Certification and for being a statewide and national leader at the Sustainable Jersey Annual Luncheon during the League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City on November 18, 2025.

“As we celebrate this milestone, our focus is already on what’s next,” said Mayor Mundell. “Sustainability isn’t a finish line, it’s an ongoing commitment to innovation, equity, and community well-being. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and we’re excited to keep building a Bloomfield that future generations will be proud to call home.”
