BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Greener Bloomfield has been awarded a $10,000 grant by Sustainable Jersey to carry out a project entitled "Township of Bloomfield Composting and Food Waste Diversion Initiative." This grant was funded by the PSEG Foundation, and presented at an announcement event on Tuesday, May 8th at the PSEG Edison Training & Development Center.

"I would like to thank Sustainable Jersey and the PSE&G Foundation for their continued partnership in our efforts to reduce waste and cut greenhouse gas emissions in Bloomfield," said Mayor Michael Venezia. "We have received certification from Sustainable Jersey for almost 10 years, and are consistently exploring new ways to bring renewable energy to our township facilities and directly to our residents. This grant funding will help us continue to reduce our carbon footprint and make Bloomfield a healthier, more vibrant place to live, work and recreate."

Sustainable Jersey began in 2009 as a collaborative effort between the NJ State League of Municipalities Mayor’s Committee for a Green Future and the Municipal Land Use Center at the College of New Jersey, in partnership with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection and NJ Board of Public Utilities. Its purpose is to provide municipalities training resources and financial incentives as they pursue sustainability initiatives. Bloomfield was first recognized by Sustainable Jersey in the non-profit’s first year, 2009, and has been re-certified every year since then.

"We in Bloomfield are fortunate to have a large population of active environmentalists committed to sustainability, and I am proud to say that with the assistance of private partnerships like Sustainable Jersey, Bloomfield Township has been making great strides," said Councilman Nicholas Joanow. "Grants provide us an opportunity to consider new ideas and initiatives that engage the public, as well as make financial investments that allow us to lead by example, and inspire nearby communities to pursue greater sustainability."
